Venue:
Leicester Haymarket Theatre Main Stage
Three mirrored doorways moved using pulleys under
the stage surface to create the different scenes. A different painting flew in also
– each one featuring Oscar Wilde’s face. Oscar Wilde’s love of Whistler’s
Peacock Room inspired the peacock theme which ran through every detail. The
costumes were inspired by the work of artist Aubrey Beardsley.

“Paul Kerryson’s sumptuous production at the
Haymarket is one to drool over. It is spectacularly staged, with huge,
interchangeable mirrored doors reflecting every piece of political intrigue…
with peacocks suggested in everything from the lighting to the colouring of the
stage floor… gorgeously costumed as well as designed by Kate Unwin.”
